History of the Estonian Centre Party

Establishment and First Years (1991-1995)

The Estonian Centre Party was founded on 12 October 1991 on the basis of the Estonian People's Front, with the aim of representing all Estonian people regardless of their nationality, gender or social background. Edgar Savisaar was elected as the party's first chairman, and under his leadership the party focused on building a strong and fairly governed state.

Growth and Development (1995-2003)

In the 1995 elections to the Riigikogu, the Centre Party achieved significant success, winning 14.2% of the vote and entering a coalition government. During this period, the party strengthened its position in Estonian politics by expanding its membership and actively participating in local government. In the 1999 elections, it achieved even greater success, winning the elections with 23.4% of the vote.

Cooperation and Enlargement (2003-2016)

In the 2003 elections to the Riigikogu, the Centre Party confirmed its strong position with 25.4% of the vote. The party focused on promoting social justice and building a strong middle class. In 2005-2007, we were part of a coalition government, contributing to the development of the Estonian economy and society.

Renewal and new leadership (2016-2023)

In 2016, Jüri Ratas was elected as party leader, bringing fresh energy and new ideas. Under his leadership, the Centre Party formed a government focused on increasing the cohesion of society and improving people's livelihoods. The party's popularity remained high, with 23.1% of the vote in the 2019 Riigikogu elections.

Current Time and Future (2023-...)

In September 2023, Mihhail Kõlvart was elected party chairman. The aim of the new leadership is to continue to work for a strong and justly governed Estonia, where everyone feels valued and included. We will focus on shaping a stable welfare state where economic success reaches everyone.

Our Values and Goals

The Estonian Centre Party's goal for the near future is to make Estonia a stable welfare state. We want to ensure social security for everyone. We stand up for there to be no peripheries in our country and for every Estonian to feel valuable. Everyone must have the opportunity to find their place in society and to be needed and included. To achieve these goals, we work together with all those who share our values.
