Prime Minister Jüri Ratas signed a political agreement with the heads of state and government of Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland and the president of the European Commission on how to proceed with synchronising the electricity networks of the Baltic countries to continental Europe.

According to research, the Baltic states will have the highest security of supply without significantly larger fixed costs in the case of two separate alternating current connections through Poland. At the same time, current data suggests that creating a second alternating current connection in addition to the current one between Lithuania and Poland is expensive and there is no certain term for the construction of the second connection. The Baltic States wish to disconnect their electricity networks from Russia and synchronise them with continental Europe by 2025.
